Chapter Eleven

Back at my mom’s house, I asked Toni to please make some drinks and meet me outside. “I need to get caught up with Brielle before she disappears,” I whispered. “I’m sorry you can’t see her. I’ll repeat everything she says, so you’re in the loop.”

“Don’t worry about it,” she said. Toni was such a wonderful friend. She knew I was feeling guilty for spending time with Brielle instead of with her and my family. “Go ahead. I’ll take care of the drinks for your mom and Elsie, then I’m going to get into my new paranormal women’s fiction novel. If I’m going to be caught up in your world of ghosties, I might as well see how a best friend deals with this sort of thing.”

I laughed. “I better read that book when you’re finished.”

“You can tell me everything Brielle says after she’s gone. It’ll be good brain exercise to remember everything.”

I chuckled at that. Since when did we start thinking of things in terms of brain exercises? Before I went outside, I checked in on the kids in the trailer. They were all on their phones—happily. For the first time since I’d met Chelsea, I was glad to see her glued to her phone, since this meant she wasn’t acting on any of Brielle’s hypnotic thought implants.

“We put a beef stew in the slow cooker for dinner, so it would be nice if one of you set the table in an hour or so.” I said. The sisters liked to eat dinner early.

Silence.

“Hello, people.”

“Huh?” Jordan said. “Yep. I’ll do it.”

“Great! Thank you. And one other thing, Jordan.”

This time my ethical hacker son looked up. “Sure. What is it?”

“Can you please see if you can find an online forum or chat group that Willie Semple may have been using to connect with people who believe in aliens?”

“As in outer space aliens?”

“Yes. That kind. I was told he has a following. It could be helpful to know what he’d been posting before he went missing.”

“Will do. Just don’t do anything dangerous, Mom, okay?”

“Of course not. And thank you.”

Outside, I found Brielle pacing in the backyard. I was glad to see she’d gotten out of the truck. Mom’s property backed onto a forest. The sharp scent of pine resin hung in the air. I breathed it in deeply as I joined her.

“So, I found out what Willie’s been up to in my life,” she said. “He was over at his mom’s yesterday.”

“Hey, wait a minute. I just thought of something. Why are you here? We’re in the same time zone, so you can’t be sleeping at this time of the day.”

“Yes, I can. When I’m on holiday, a big part of indulging myself is taking afternoon naps. Don’t you nap?”

“No. Never.” Even when my kids were babies, I didn’t sleep during the day. I’d always had too much to do to take naps. And now, having a café certainly didn’t allow for afternoon siestas.

“I couldn’t function without naps,” she said. “Honestly, even when I’m working, I take cat naps.
